SBRY has developed a recreational basketball program that provides an early introduction to the game for youngsters and competitive lay for boys and girls as they get older.
2nd Grade and under
Held on Saturday mornings, this program runs for 60 minutes. This is not a drop off recreation program. Children in this age group must have a guardian in attendance and often parents are asked to assist. The aim of the program is to introduce young players to basketball and teach them basic skills. Practice consists of basic drills set up as “fun” activities. A short game managed by the coaches, emphasizing the use of skills learned ends each session.
3rd and 4th Grade
This program takes the previous Saturday morning program a step further. In addition to general skills, there are conceptual aspects added to practice as well as some light conditioning. All of this is intended to introduce the “team” concept to young players and the expectations and demands that come with playing on a team. This program is kept “age appropriate” but does require a commitment from the players to learn. Practices run for an hour and a half and usually end with an inter-squad game. There are 6 to 8 games played against other towns.
Northwest Basketball League (5th and 6th Grade)
These teams may practice 2-3 times each week, with a schedule of about 14 games each season. The games are usually played on Saturdays and Sundays. However, there may be an occasional week-night game. Each team ends the season with a league tournament.
Northwest Basketball League (7th and 8th Grade)
Regional Route 44 (Boys and Girls)
This age group competes on a regional Route 44 team for both the boys and the girls. Tryouts may be held for the teams, which play about 16 games each season. The League travels to towns in the greater Litchfield County area. Each league holds an end of season tournament.
