Sharon Youth and Rec

Sharon Board of Recreation & Youth

The Sharon Youth and Recreation Commission is a member of the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association, Northwest Disctrict and participates locally in the Northwest Soccer League with other CJSA members. All programs are open to resident youths who may play on more than one team, but who are required to give their 'first allegiance' to the team most appropriate to their age and sex.

Soccer is a game or all skill levels. The program supported by the SBRY is targeted at specific age groups which allow children to develop their abilities along with their peers and play games with children their age. Sign-ups for the fall season are held at the end of the school year in June and again at the end of the summer. Players may also play in the Berkshire United Soccer Club in the Spring and the Fall.

5 and Under(U-6)

Held on Saturday mornings and supervised by parents, this program allows even the youngest players to come out and kick goals! There are no games played and if there are scrimmages, they are not against other towns or teams, only among the youngsters that turn out. The primary emphasis at this age is kicking and dribbling the ball.

Under 8 (U-8)

This is for 6 and 7 year olds. This program has a game schedule as well as a weekly practice which is held after school. Games are generally Saturday afternoon. There is also a scheduled tournament. Completion of the program and tournament is early November. U-8 plays on a field that is approximately 70% of an actual soccer field. All players that sign up will play. The emphasis in this group is FUN FIRST!. Skills are demonstrated and encouraged in practices.

Under 10 (U-10) and Under 12 (U-12)

These groups play a schedule similar to U-8, but there are more frequent practices at the discretion of the coaches. The U-10 (8 and 9 year olds) play on the abbreviated field of the U-8 group. U-12 (10 and I I year olds) play on the large field. Schedules are a function of the number of teams, and games are scheduled by the recreation director. Uniforms are provided and are collected at the end of the season. There is a tournament for each of these groups as well. All players who sign up will play in all games, although some will play more than others. There is an emphasis in these groups of basic skills, and attentiveness to direction is expected. The coach at this level is looking to the team to begin playing as a cohesive unit, rather than a group of individuals.

Under 14 (U-14)
